Simple Application

When you notice your mind running wild over potentially ill-fated, futuristic circumstances, congratulations—you noticed! Noticing is the first step. If mindfulness is about one thing, it’s about taking a moment to notice.

Next, determine if, aside from your negative thoughts, you’re okay at this moment. It helps to feel your feet on the ground while taking a gentle, slow breath through your nose. The breathing itself does nothing special mentally, but noticing the breathing puts you in the NOW . Look at some objects around you. Right now, I’m seeing a stack of books, a wooden desktop, and a wooden cup holder with the shape of a sea turtle at its center. I’m aware of the empty space between myself and the door. It’s peaceful.

After you’ve noticed a few things, ask yourself, “Am I, at this moment, okay?”
